I dared to call Him Father (Bilquis Sheikh) Revised edition 2003
The miraculous story of a muslim woman's encounter with God.
* Bilquis Sheikh was a Muslim Pakistani woman of noble birth. Left by her husband, a high-ranking government official, in the 1960s, she retreated to her family estate to live out her days in quite luxury. But the deep-down peace she sought eluded her, until one day an incredible journey into the father heart of God began….
This is the gripping and un-put-downable true story of an intelligent, well-respected woman whose conversion to Christianity leads her into danger, but fulfilment and joy. It tells how God led a normal woman in supernatural ways to Himself, turning her life around. Initially prompted by a “frightening presence” in her garden, Bilquis is led through dreams and visions to the “strange book”, the Bible, the words in which “burned in my heart like glowing embers”, and ultimately to knowing God’s Father heart.
I dare anyone who reads this book not to be challenged by Bilquis’ total obedience to Christ, in spite of the danger for Christian converts in Pakistan at that time. It made me really question how committed I am not just to doing God’s will but to listening for God’s voice in every aspect of life.
And yet I also found her heart-warmingly human. The simple child-like faith demonstrated in such an intelligent and obviously accomplished woman is what makes the story so interesting and unique.
Maybe one of the most encouraging themes of this book is the possibility for God to move in the most unexpected places in the most surprising ways. As Bilquis herself puts it:
“Without knowing it, events had been set in motion that would shatter the world I’d known all my life”.
