Velvet Elvis : repainting the Christian faith (Rob Bell) 2005
Written by Rob Bell of the Nooma DVD Series, this excellent book explores our search for a total understanding of God and our faith to art which is forever changing, forming and shaping, but never complete . We still need to keeping painting............
* Having seen some of the excellent Nooma series of DVDs (also available in the resource library) I was expecting good things from this book and I was not disappointed. Rob Bell, founder of Mars Hill Church - one of the fastest growing in US history - has a remarkable knack of identifying the things that, deep down, we all know and recognise in our souls, and expressing them in a way reaches straight into the culture of today. In Velvet Elvis he uses the analogy of a painting of 'the King' that has lain hidden in his basement. It may be a good enough picture, but no one would be daft enough to consider it the last word in art. The work of the artist is never done, there is always more to depict and new ways to do it. So to with our faith, it shoud be active, always moving forward, we are called to wrestle with scripture and work out its message for us in this place, today. He urges the church to steer away from dogmatism to discovery and discipleship. I found so much in this short book that resonated and made sense - read it!! Cath Edmonds,May 2006
