The Priest (Francine Rivers) 2004
Moses parted the Red Sea. But in his shadow stood a man who symbolizes forever our great High Priest. This is one of five novellas in the Sons of Encouragement series by Francine Rivers. Brilliant prose and gripping characterisations. Includes a Bible study for individual/group use.
* Some readers may have come across Francine Rivers' work before, in particular, the powerful and beautifully written 'Redeeming Love' (also available from the Christchurch Library), based on the book of Hosea but set in the harsh world of the American old-west. In this series of novellas, Rivers takes a different approach, in that they are essentially, straight novelisations of the stories of famous old testament characters, very much lifted straight from the pages of scripture, but told in a very readable and absorbing way. The Priest focuses particularly on Aaron as he struggles to do his best on behalf of the wandering people of Israel. At 195 pages, it is a shortish read but time very well spent, re-engaging with the story of the Exodus. There is also a useful study section at the end of the book which house groups may find helpful. Cath Edmonds, Sept 2006
