Sisters of Sinai : How two lady adventurers found the hidden gospels (Janet Soskice)2009

The re-telling of the travel adventures and biblical detection by two women from Scotland.

* This well written and researched book tells the story of twin sisters, born in 1843 who led most remarkable lives of travel, learning which led them to the discovery, in St. Catherine’s Monastery in the Sinai desert, of one of the most important early manuscripts of the gospels written in ancient Syriac language. Inheriting a large fortune and having been encouraged to travel providing they could speak the language of the country they undertook many expeditions and became renowned and recognised for the work they had done. In the book group their story generated discussion on the education of women, academic rivalry, use of wealth, the increase in types of bible translations and our attitudes to other denominations.
